On June 23, 2016, The U.S. Department of Transportation announced that Columbus, Ohio was the winner of its Smart City Challenge. Since then the city of Columbus plans to use the money to link neighborhoods, expand public transportation as well as freight while encouraging additional growth by providing an environment for new and existing technology companies to locate in the city. In terms of expanding freight and logistics the developments include Smartphone apps to help direct truck traffic, data sharing, and the testing of remote-controlled truck platoons in urban areas. |
