Spotlight Planned Special Events

Certain planned special events (PSEs) affect multiple regions and merit sharing of strategies, lessons, and other resources among transportation professionals. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) offers resources specific to the following recent and upcoming spotlight events:

  • 2024 Eclipse – This total solar eclipse took place on April 8, 2024, and crossed through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
  • 2026 FIFA World Cup™ – This event engages Canada, Mexico, and the United States across 16 venues to hold 104 games from June 11 through July 19, 2026.
  • 2028 Summer Olympics – Los Angeles, host to the 1932 and 1984 Olympics, is already in full planning mode for the 2028 Summer Games to take place from July 14 through July 30, 2028. Spotlight site forthcoming in year 2025.
