On October 18, 2015, the Department of Transportation introduced The National Freight Strategic Plan in Seattle. The plan lays out freight challenges including: the increase in population within the next 30 years; a 40 percent increase in freight volume by 2040; ports that will see larger and larger vessels carrying more and more containers; a tripling of air freight; a doubling of multimodal shipments; and double the volume of imports and exports. Due to these growing challenges, the National Freight Strategic Plan proposes new ways to encourage states and local governments to invest in and plan freight projects, and ways to accelerate technologies that can change the game for both safety and efficiency. |
