The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have outlined the Smart Roadside Initiate, or a plan to outfit trucks and highway facilities with the ability to communicate wirelessly. A major component of the Smart Roadside Initiative will be Wireless Roadside Inspections; inspections where trucks would transmit data such as driver hours of service and tire inflation to the inspection facility while in motion allowing enforcement to focus on high-risk carriers. Testing of such systems has begun in New York, Tennessee, and Kentucky as well as other research which NHTSA hopes to use to make a decision on vehicle requirements in 2014. |
