Although the Port of Houston ranks first in the U.S. in ports handling foreign waterborne tonnage and second in terms of overall tonnage, there are still obstacles to position the Houston region as "The Gateway to North America." Of these obstacles, two include modernizing the region's rail network to accommodate 21st century locomotives and hiring truck drivers to move freight. This article discusses these challenges from the local level perspective as well as highlight how the Houston region hopes to overcome the challenges. |
