North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has recently turned over the Piedmont and Northern Railroad corridor to a short line railroad company for future inspection, maintenance, marketing, and operation of trains after a competitive bidding and selection process. Under terms of the lease, the short line railroad Patriot Rail will provide property rental, revenue sharing and return-on-upgrade-investment payments to NCDOT. Train traffic on this corridor is expected to increase the efficiency of goods movement in the region as well as job creation and mark the first time in more than 20 years when this railroad corridor has been in use. |
