Description	New research conducted by the Volpe Center finds that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA) Safety Measurement System (SMS) is more effective at identifying commercial bus and truck companies for targeting enforcement than the system it replaced. Using both pre-SMS historical data and 18 months of crash records, researchers found that the companies the SMS would have identified for interventions had a crash rate of more than double the national average.
