Description: | The America's Transportation Awards competition, sponsored by AASHTO, the American Automobile Association (AAA), and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, honors projects that came in ahead of schedule, under budget, or showed an excellent use of innovation. For 2011 the Grand Prize winner was the Florida Department of Transportation's massive reconstruction of the I-10/I-95 interchange, known locally as the Big I project. The project involved reconstructing 17 bridges, 21 ramps, and 25 lane miles built over and around traffic moving through one of the busiest interchanges in the State. FDOT used night time lane closures, construction of temporary ramps and roadways, and detours to local roads to manage impacts to motorists during the project. FDOT finished the project 6 months ahead of schedule, saving motorists from additional delays and reducing costs to taxpayers. In addition to the Grand Prize winner, nine other projects were recognized for outstanding work. |
