Description: | Transportation departments in Missouri, Texas, Utah, and Virginia were recently recognized with Roadway Work Zone Safety Awareness Awards by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) for their efforts to reduce roadway work zone injuries and fatalities. The Missouri DOT placed first in the "Outreach Campaign/State Level" category for its "Barrel Bob" outreach program, which uses a mascot to bring attention to work zone safety. The Texas DOT won second place in the same category for its "Safety: Mission Zero Campaign," which included the production of a work zone best practices video for field workers, a statewide media and public education campaign to observe National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week, and improvements to work zone equipment and procedures. The Utah DOT won first place in the "Outreach Campaign/Local Level" for its "Think Safety Outreach Campaign," which educated students on the dangers of entering work zones. The Virginia DOT won home second place in the same category for its "Work Zone Awareness Senior Safety Challenge," which safe driving in work zones specifically to high school seniors. |
